Oaks’ Pre-season Review

529342_10100414161384672_1707026714_nAfter a few months of rest and relaxation excitement was building in the Sheffield Oaks camp as preparation for the new season began. Pre-season training started with a lot of promise as old faces returned along with some new faces joining the fray.

With a new game plan and a change in mindset to more attacking rugby there has been plenty for us to work on during pre-season as we look to push on from last season and target a top 4 spot in Yorkshire 4 next season.

Early signs have been very promising with players adapting well and thriving under the new systems. Competition has been fierce and both coaches have been impressed with the progress made.

Sheffield Oaks first pre-season game was a loss to a Thorne RUFC 1st/2nd XV. All involved knew it was going to be a tough game and this was confirmed when Oaks arrived to see a strong Thorne side with a lot of depth on the bench. All players can be very proud of the performance against a quality opposition.

The work put in during pre-season was evident as Oaks showed signs of their attacking mindset with all players looking to off load and continue the attack. The game was interrupted with numerous scrums which was to be expected as both sides showed signs of rustiness. Honourable mention goes to the Oaks front 3 who played the full 80 mins and combined frequently in the game with soft hands to continue the attack and make metres–a big improvement on last year!

Oaks look forward to playing Rotherham Clifton RUFC on 16th August (k.o. 3pm) in what will be another testing game for us. With some returning players being involved for the first time this season, the aim is to put in a clinical performance against the Yorkshire 5 side. All non playing members and fans are welcome to come and watch what will hopefully be a very enjoyable game.
