Preseason update & Simon Allen Memorial match

The new Yorkshire 4 season is only a few weeks away now. If you’ve been following us on Facebook and Twitter you’ll know that our preseason matches have been shaping up nicely.

Our first game was away to Stanley Rodillians. Oaks played strongly, scoring first in both halves. Unfortunately the win slipped away in the last quarter making the final score 35-24. Tries were scored by: Jordan Hollis 2, Callum Schofield and David Terrington. First team débuts were made by Ben Wheeliker, Ollie Moore, CJ Leffer, Rory Toman, and Andy Tattersall.

Last Saturday we travelled to Thorne to play Thornensians 2s. After a slightly later kick off than advertised Oaks played an excellent match, with strong line outs, mauls and handling, winning 12-46. Try scorers were: Leigh Brocklehurst 2, Rory Toman 2, Callum Schofield, Ben Wheeliker, Kelvin Charles, Alex Taylor (début).

This weekend we making the short trip to Stocksbridge to play in the Bradfield Brewery Cup. We will be joined by Mosborough and Wortley for the 4 team tournament. Supports will be pleased hear that there will be a fully licenced bar and BBQ from 1.30pm. The meet time is 12.30pm at Niagara for 2pm kick off. Full details of the tournament are here.

Our last preseason game is the annual Simon Allen Memorial Match played at Niagara, Wednesday 26th August 6.15pm kick off. We would like to invite all Oaks players, past and present, to come and support from the touch line.

The tradition began in 1982, following the untimely death of Simon Allen. Allen was former Myers Grove pupil and rugby player who was due to become a student at Cambridge University when he died.

The match was originally played between Sheffield Oaks and West Barbarians until 2001. Since then Oaks have played the South Yorkshire Police, who won back the trophy from the Yorkshire 4 side last year in a tightly fought game. After the match we will be running our regular meat raffle (generously provided by Beeches of Walkely) in the bar and our players would be pleased to meet supporters and former clubmen.
