Sheffield Oaks suffered yet another narrow defeat on Saturday against a travelling Ossett side.
In wet conditions, the Hillsborough club made the perfect start carrying flanker Aled Vaughan over from the back of a maul for an early score. The conversion was missed, but a Joseph Henson penalty soon extended the lead to eight points.
Discipline was fast becoming an issue for the Oaks though, and they found themselves on the wrong end of the penalty count – wasting good possession and territory in the process. Still, some excellent defence meant that the score was 8-3 going into the final twenty minutes.
Unfortunately things unravelled from here, as the away side crossed three times before the final whistle. The first exploiting a disorganised kick-chase, and the other two from long range interceptions while Oaks chased the game.
The final score was 8-27 and the Hillsborough side were left scratching their heads at a feisty and even game that they lead for long periods. Stand out performers included livewire scrum half Mark Burch and back-three-wrecking-ball Daniel Hickey.
Saturday brings a trip up the M1 to Leeds Corinthians while the 2s are at home to Sheffield Engineers, both 2:15 kick offs.
