The Sheffield Oaks kicked off their pre-season friendlies with a trip to Worksop RUFC to take part in a round robin tournament on Saturday. Playing both Worksop and East Retford RUFC gave the Oaks the test themselves against clubs outside those usually faced in the Yorkshire leagues. The weather was fantastic and sporting the new 40th anniversary shirts, the Oaks improved across the two games.
Displaying moments of superb attack and stern defence, the Oaks looked particularly strong when they picked up the pace using tap and go penalties. Added to that, tries from well organised rolling mauls as well as sweeping backs moves look to stand the Sheffield side in good stead for the coming season. There were of course some areas to work on, but the lads will feel glad to have blown away the cobwebs and got the 40th anniversary season off and running.
Notable mentions to Simon Lau, whose running always looked dangerous, the ball carrying and tackling of Jeh, and to the new faces making their Oaks debuts; Drew and Chris.
Sheffield Oaks would like to thank Worksop for the invite, and hope to organise future games between the clubs this season.Preseason training continues every Tuesday and Thursday 6:30 at Parson Cross Park. The Oaks will look to continue their preseason development when they take part in the Bradfield Brewery Cup on Saturday 26th
