Oaks Season Preview

As the 2019/2020 season approaches, there is a sense of optimism and excitement around Sheffield Oaks.

There are new faces on the club’s committee, including Leon Mantey, whose role focuses on recruitment. On the back of this recruitment drive, we have several promising new players (including Oliver Ind, Matthew Skeoch and Elliot Kulleseid) and have welcomed back some familiar faces (including Conor Riverol and Giovanni Petrucci). This has added to our quality and, perhaps more crucially, our squad depth.  Last season saw decent performances, with little return in the form of results. Having a larger pool of players should help us close out games more often.

A larger squad will also mean that we can get the second team firing again this season. With that in mind, we are open to players of all abilities and experience coming to train with the Oaks. We’re still training Tuesday and Thursday evenings (except Thursday the 5th) at Parson Cross Park, 6:30pm start.

In the firsts Bryce Redmill has joined Leigh Brocklehurst as joint vice captains. I’m confident that we have the right balance of on field leadership, with myself, these two and our other experienced players.

A new approach to coaching has also been implemented ahead of this campaign with a sterling effort made by the new coaching committee. David Terrington, James McKinnon Holmes & I have become involved in coaching the side, with the focus on basic skills and fitness meaning we’re better equipped for the season ahead. Preseason training has gone well so far, with numbers higher than previous years and the intensity of the sessions being a big positive.

We have had three physical preseason games, which have seen wins against Meden Vale and Yorkshire Main, with a defeat to a strong Hemsworth side in between. There is just the Memorial match against SY Police on 4th September, before the league season starts.

The first game sees us travel to Nestle Rowntree on 14th September, with the 2s away at Mosborough 2s. As mentioned, there is a sense within the club that this season will be successful, and we are aiming to start on a high.
